Ups and downs!

Ups and downs!

John Graham28 Feb 2022 - 12:20

Contrasting fortunes for the teams but lots of positivity!

The mens league season is moving towards it closing stages with just 5 weekend of the regular season to go. It's been a challenging season with a few off pitch problems concerning pitches etc but on the field each week we've continued to work away each week

The mens 1s started the season not really knowing what to expect, in a league with 10 teams they'd never previously faced it was going to be interesting! The competition has been tough, no doubt about it - it's a step up from what we've been used to in the past and at times that has shown. But week in week out the team goes out looking to improve and the signs are positive. With 5 weeks to go the 1st are sat 3rd from bottom, the aim at this stage is to remain in the division and build towards next year. The weekend saw us up against Wilmslow 3s who sit 3rd in the league and for much of the match it looked as if we'd get a result, unfortunately though a 3-1 halftime lead was overturned by Wilmslow who ran out 4-3 winners. This was a very good performance though against a team that will be looking to finish top 2 and it's something to build on starting this week at training.

The mens 2s were in a similar position at the start of the season facing lots of new teams, they've adapted brilliantly and are the form team in the league currently. Since the 2s entered the league a few years ago we've seen players developing well and this season things really have come together - currently the 2s are on an 11 game unbeaten run having won 9 of those 11, sitting 3rd in the table the focus is on picking up the points week in week out and seeing how the table lies come the end of the season. A promotion is certainly achievable but we'll not get too carried away and look at it week by week. This week the 2s travelled to face Triton 4s who were sitting in mid table and for the second week running earned a 5-1 win, Alan Travis (4) and Jack O'Neill with the goals.

The big difference we're seeing at these Cheshire based clubs is the hockey setup in those areas is miles ahead of what we have locally, it's a really popular sport at school levels and that's just a challenge we will have to deal with. As a club we're looking to do what we can to close some of those gaps but for now hard work and effort is the priority with both teams giving their all week on week!
